NEA CGS School Carnival 2007

I had the chance to attend the NEA Clean and Green Singapore School Carnival at Suntec on the 6th and 7th Nov for both work and play. The carnival is pretty interesting, with participants from 80+ schools, ranging from primary level all the way to tertiary level.

Some of the programmes highlight includes: Mr & Miss Teen Earth 2007 Peagant, Recycled Material Fashion Show etc...
There were also a lot of schools projects and sculpture showcases.
Several exhibits in the sculpture competition and school projects were quite attention grabbing and I snapped a few photos of them:

A project of an penguin clad in trash from Unity Secondary. A poignant sight actually but its quite a good piece of art. I kinda like the orange plastic netting piece that adds a trapped feeling to it. I did stirred up some mental images of penguin in distress. However, one doesn't find such trash near habitat where penguin resides.

Now, lets take another look at another penguin;

This penguin is nicer looking then the first and the message it sends out is so obvious that you gotta be blind to miss it. Light-bulb encircling penguins causing them to sweat and the ice-cap to melt. The underlying message must be energy conservation to prevent build up of carbon emissions.

To be honest, I saw a lot of other penguins as well. In my opinion, the image of penguin should not be overly milked! I think i saw at least 10 penguins in distress at the exhibition. (I choose these 2 as they are more prominent and easy to comprehend.) The idea to milk the concept of all its worth is so wrong! From an educational viewpoint, too many images of the same thing will result in a desensitizing experience. Especially for the many students thronging the hall.

I also saw a monster-fish from the movie "Finding Nemo". A sculpture protraying one of the villain of the movie. A great change to penguins. The design is also refreshing not to mention totally in line with the theme that all sculpture must be created from recycled products. Just look at the recycled bulb hanging from the feeler of the fish. A look at the gaping mouth and you will see all the trash threatening the environment. Simply Brillant! Kudos to Riverside Sec for winning a title in the competition!

Finally a sculpture that makes you think twice about scarfing down that bowl of sharkfin!

Nicely sculptured. Underlying message cannot be clearer. Please go for artifical sharkfin instead!

The underlying message of this sculpture "Boy with globe and cup in hand" is fuzzy. When I looked more closely in an attempt to decipher the meaning, I got a little taken aback by what I thought...... (Until I realise that it's just me.) Anyway, a representation of the picture from the angle I was viewing. One can think what they want to think. The sculpturer are just kids from St' Anthony Pri by the way.

This sculpture comes complete with flashing colour light and stands about 5 feet high. The tallest among all sculpture entry.

The lighting is not gaudy at all and I don't mind having one at home with some modification and refinement to it. It will make a good conversation topic when I invite guest home sometimes.

An impressive project from ITE College West: ITE Dover. This projects explore the relationship of long-term viability between fish-farming and hydroponics. There are some electronics involved in this project as well. Now imagine water from your fish tank being used for hydroponics farming! (Solution with fish waste from lower tank being used to fertilise the vegetable in upper tank.) This project has commercial promise and is environmental friendly. More of such projects for future environmental exhibition would be nice.

The fashion show which featured fashion products from recycled items is also very entertaining. It's the first time in my life that I am watching a fashion show actually. Some of the fashion costume is indeed very creative. My only concern would be the amount of flesh that is revealed on stage.

Some are really scantily-clad. I choose not to take any pictures of them as I didn't want to exploit them. A lot of teenage boys were around, taking picture like crazy. For what purpose, I think only they themselves know.

I choose to feature one of the winning entry instead:

My camera doesn't do them justice. But Bedok South Sec has submitted a very strong entry. With clear theme for their fashion piece and scoring high on both practicality and wearability.(without the headpiece of course!) They deserve to be among the winning teams.

There was also a "Mr and Miss Teen Earth 2007" peagant. The real purpose of this peagant is lost to me. (this helps public education among the kids?) Also, when I looked at the results of the online voting; I smell a fish.

Congratualation to Commonwealth Sec on their double win for Mr and Miss Teen Earth nonetheless!

2 group pics to sum up the enriching experience:

From Left: Yours truly, Gavin, Selina and Elizabeth

Razali is the project I/C for this event and Gavin, Selina and Elizabeth are TP interns at NEA. A fun bunch who can work and play. Apologies to Selina for mistaking her name as Aisha, thanks to Razali for telling me that!~

Also to Gavin, for signing me up for the NEA Environmentally Lifestyle Programme.

Note: NEA also has a lot of interesting programmes. No harm zipping over to their website for a quick look for those who are interested.
